Having recently moved into a new apartment, Ryan and I thought that we needed to get a grill to celebrate and enjoy the summer. Our old apartment was in the same building, but the balcony was closed due to construction. The new one has a functioning balcony with a beautiful view, so what better way is there to enjoy it than getting a grill?

When deciding which grill to get, I had a few things I was looking for. First of all, the grill should not cost a ridiculous amount of money. I am not Bobby Flay and will not use all the features and power of an expensive, $700 grill. Secondly, the grill does not need to be huge and have many burners. Most of the time, the grilling will be for just Ryan and I and we don't want to waste precious space on our balcony, so a small grill is what we needed. Lastly, the grill has to be gas, since charcoal is banned in our high-rise.

I searched Amazon and the first candidate was this Masterbuilt Veranda:

The grill looks like an art deco piece and is not to expensive. Sadly, it seems to be discontinued and getting replacement parts would not be easy.

After reading reviews for various grills on Amazon, I decided on getting the Char-Broil Patio Caddie:

This grill fit into everything I was looking for, so we went down to Home Depot and bought it. After about 30 minutes of assembling the thing, it was hooked up to a gas tank and ready to go.

This was our first gas grill, and igniting it was very easy. It quickly heats up and despite it's small size, the cooking area is pretty roomy. We bought some bison and gorgonzola onion burger patties at Whole Foods, along with some corn to try on the grill. The results were delicious:

All together, a successful purchase, I think.

Next thing we are going to try on the grill... shish-kabobs.

This blog has been neglected for too long, so I have finally decided to update it regularly. I have moved from Drupal to WordPress, due to Drupal being more than I needed from blog software. I am aiming for a look that is clean and at the same time can bring together all of my posts, twitter updates, Flickr photos, etc...

I've also changed the name from Leo's Tech Blog to Leo's Updates (although I might change the name again, if I can think of something good). I don't post only about technology, so a change of names seemed like the logical thing to do.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Ryan and I are moving to Chicago in August. One of the good things about this is that I won't have a 45 mile commute to work anymore. The University of Chicago is only about 7 miles from our future apartment. I was thinking about getting a bike for this commute, as it would be good my health and also cut out almost all of my gas expenses. Does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of bike I should get? I was looking at Trek's site and the Soho 3 looked good to me:

There's also a local Bike store here in Valpo (Jano Bicycles) and they sell Specialized bikes. This Specialized bike looked good to me as well:

Does anyone have any suggestions on which Bike I should get, or what I should look for in a good urban bike?

Today, iPhone users can now use any GSM provider they wish, due to the availability of the first Open Source iPhone GUI unlocking software. Engadget reports that the software is functional and reset-resistant. It is pretty tempting to try this out on my phone and switch to T-Mobile, but I am going to wait a few days until the software has its bugs worked out and the consequences of using this unlock are clear.

White peaches from California are available at Whole Foods in Lakeview right now, which means true Bellini cocktails are just a blender spin away. The famous Italian aperitif starts with a glass of cold Prosecco (an inexpesive sparkling wine from Italy), topped with a white peach nectar puree, and garnished with a berry or perhaps a little nugget of the stone fruit and a sprig of mint. Epicurious has a recipe from the Hotel Cipriani in Venice that is both simple and classic. Best make them quick. The white peach season is notoriously short.

I have had many people ask me questions about how to do this and this article has a fairly detailed breakdown of the process. However, it only talks about Windows software. If you are looking for some OS X software to rip DVDs, I recommend MacTheRipper and for transcoding video files to DVD I recommend ffmpegx. If you're a Linux user, then I highly recommend k9copy for copying DVDs and just plain ffmpeg for transcoding them.

As some of you may have noticed, my server has been down a lot lately. This is because the Dell Dimension XPS T550 that this site (and my IRC server) had been running on died, after 8 years of service. I suspect the processor started going, because gcc would have internal errors.

This week, I finally decided to shell out the money for a new server. I got a Dell PowerEdge 1650 (Dual 1.4 Ghz P3, 2GB RAM, 2x73GB SCSI disks and RAID) off eBay and put Fedora Core 6 on it. Then I restored the data from the old box onto this one (which took some work as the hard drive was a little bit hosed on the old box) and here we are. I will be updating this much more often now and the uptime should be good now.

Stay tuned for pictures of the new server!

If you have a decent number of Linux machines and you want them all to share the same authentication scheme (allow a user to login on each of the machines), what do you do?

One of the best solutions is LDAP. LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol and it is basically a database of user information. You can use LDAP as a global address book of sorts, and you can also use it to store user information, such as usernames and password. Getting LDAP configured on Linux can be challenging, and I have been looking for a good guide on how to do it. The problem is that setting it up is slightly different on every Linux distro, because of differences in how each distro has PAM set up. However, I have found a great guide, that makes setting up LDAP far easier. If you get authentication with LDAP working, you'll never look back.

You always hear news of tech companies having lay offs and firing thousands of workers. Don't want to be one of them? You have to make it so that you are irreplacable at your job. How do you do that? Make yourself the only person that can maintain your code. Here is a great guide on how to do this. The guide has some great suggestions, such as "Make sure that every method does a little bit more (or less) than its name suggests. As a simple example, a method named isValid(x) should as a side effect convert x to binary and store the result in a database."When I did a lot of C++ programming in High School, I often made my code difficult, if not impossible to follow, because if my teacher didn't know what the code did, but knew it worked, he wouldn't bother grading it in great depth, but instead would give me a quick A.

Do you ever find yourself watching some fascinating program on PBS only to be interupted by their annoying anchors begging for money? Wouldn't it be so much better if Klingons ran PBS? Someone apparently thought so. Instead of getting some lame NPR handbag as a present for donating, you would get "a cask of blood wine delivered on the anniversary of your Rite of Ascension". The anchors would also have great pitch lines, like "It is without honor to listen and not pledge." Maybe I'm a nerd but thinking about this is just so hilarious to me.

This Macworld UK article descibes how the latest James Bond DVD Collection has been digitally remastered using G5s. Apparently, they are the most economical and reliable option when it comes to video editing. Also interesting was how they scanned in each frame of every James Bond movie at 4000x3000 resolution, for possible future use with HD versions of the movies. DVDs only support 720x576.

It is exciting that Casino Royale, the new Bond movie is coming out soon, and that it actually looks like it is going to be a good film.

I am heavily considering diverting 007's Domain here, and posting James Bond news here from now on. I don't have the time anymore to maintain a full James Bond website (unless someone wants to help me out), but I do have the time to post some news and articles when I find something interesting, and this would bring some more traffic here.

This doesn't have much to do with technology but I am a big fan of tea so I'm writing about it anyway.

I was surprised to learn that there is only one tea plantation in the US and it was at risk of being closed. This is the country of the Boston Tea Party, after all. It is only a matter of time until tea becomes as popular as coffee and people will learn the differences between good tea and lipton. Once, most people thought that Sanka was what coffee really tasted like. Starbucks taught us different and a similar tea house chain may soon come along and do what Starbucks did for coffee, but for tea.

Before I moved into my dorm this year, I never really knew how to cook anything. Suddenly, when I moved in, I had a full kitchen and everything at my command that I needed to make myself delicious meals, and what is more delicious than steak and mashed potatoes? I was reading the SomethingAwful forums one day, and I came across this post. For months I yearned to make this delicious steak and finally, I got all the ingredients together. I made the steak, my suitemate Dave and his girlfriend Joyce made the mashed potatoes and Kyle sauted the onions. Here is how to do:

First get a pot of water boiling for the mashed potatoes.

Next, get together the ingredients you'll need to make the mashed potatoes (potatoes, salt, pepper, garlic powder, potato peeler and butter):

Peel the potatoes:

Chop each potato in half, and then chop each half into quarters:

Once the water is boiling, drop in the diced potatoes and leave it at a boil until they are soft:

Kyle and Bob are getting pumped for dinner:

Now onto the steak! What you'll need is some steak, extra virgin first cold pressed olive oil, sea salt, and pepper (I prefer a grinder). You should also pre-heat your oven to 450 degrees:

Coat the steak's surface with a thin layer of olive oil:

Sprinkle some salt on the surface of the steak:

Add some pepper to the steak as well:

Flip steak over and do the same to the other side. Repeat for all steaks that you are preparing:

Heat up your cast iron skillet, and once it's hot, drop a steak on there:

Sear it for 10-20 seconds, then flip over and sear for another 10-20 seconds:

Now, stick the whole skillet into your pre-heated oven:

The steak should stay in the oven around 3 minutes on each side for a medium-done steak. So after three minutes, take it out and flip it over, then put it back in for another three:

Once the time is up, take the steak out, let it sit for a few minutes (so that it reabsorbs its own juices) and it's done! Now do the same for the other steaks you are preparing:

Now back to the mashed potatoes! Once they are soft, drain out all the water and mash the potatoes with a masher until they do not have any chunks in them:

As you are mashing the potatoes, add garlic powder, salt and pepper to your liking, and then transfer the mashed potatoes onto a plate:

Chop up some onions, and saute them, if you would like that on your steak:

Finally, serve and enjoy (and know there the party is at, like Kyle does):

Please leave feedback on this post, and if you would like me to attempt any more cooking demonstrations.

I also registered the leozh.org domain, since Yahoo! had a great $2.99 per year domain sale. The new domain points to this site. Finally, I have recently learned how to make some delicious steaks, and my next big article will be a picture guide on how you too can make a delicious steak! Stay tuned!

My first article on this website will actually be a paper that is intended for my application to the Rutgers School of Communication, Information and Library Studies. There are many boundaries that separate people from IT, and more precisely, boundaries that separate people from experiencing the full spectrum of what IT has to offer. A big part of the problem is the computer itself. Computers, specifically ones that run Windows (which is on 90% of computers on the Internet) are insecure. They encounter worms and viruses, become infected by spyware. Software on computers that run windows are often hard to configure and install, and are often times entirely unstable. These problems turn many people off from IT. In addition, boundaries are created between the user and what he wants to accomplish on the computer. With Web 2.0, all of these problems can be solved. Web 2.0 is a revolution that is recently developing on the Internet. However, many people don't know what Web 2.0 entails. Technically speaking, Web 2.0 is a collection of technologies, such as AJAX, DHTML, XML, RSS that allow users with broadband connections to use programs which are located on a central web host directly through the Internet. However, to become more familiar with the possibilities of Web 2.0, you must first imagine the capabilities of accessing any service or program that you usually would from your computer (email, schedules, and bookmarks) from any web-browser equipped computer in the world. Imagine that you wouldn't have to worry about the set-up of these programs, as it would all be set up on the web server. Imagine that the interface for these programs was just as refined as the most well-developed program on Windows. Lastly, you could share things such as your favorite bookmarks, pictures, and news stories with your friends, access the favorites of others and see what other individuals are reading right now. These are all capabilities of Web 2.0 and merely in the past year have websites taken advantage of all of these capabilities online. Perhaps the first high-profile Web 2.0 website to be launched was Google's GMail service. Typical webmail programs have unattractive interfaces and lack features to products such as Microsoft Outlook. GMail, however, was different. GMail offers it's users over 1GB of storage space on each email account. More importantly, the GMail user interface is arguably streamlined and more appealing than any Windows e-mail clients. GMail also has more features than most email clients. These features, such as searching your inbox work much faster than with a typical client due to the processing done on Google's high-powered servers. AJAX powered Web 2.0 applications similar to this work on any modern web browser (such as Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera), without the need of installation. They are simply available to users at any time. Another high-profile Web 2.0 website is del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us). This website allows the user to store and view his or her bookmarks from any computer on the Internet. A user logs into the del.icio.us website and then proceeds to view or add new bookmarks. The innovative feature of this website is not only does the user keep his or her bookmarks in a central location, but once a bookmark has been added, the user sees what other users bookmarked the same website including categories they filed it under. This feature allows people do something that has never been done before, and is to easily find people with the same interests as them. Through this, an individual may opt to find more websites that they may interest them. The bookmarking also allows people to skip the more seedy parts of the Internet, such as spyware distributing websites, since it is unlikely anyone would bookmark those. del.icio.us is by its very nature a social website because it facilitates greater communication and interaction between people, In turn the result is a better Internet experience for all who are involved.

Welcome to my new website! I was thinking about how I can add some interesting and useful content to my website, and I came upon the idea that I should document some of the things I am constantly playing with on my computer. There are many articles soon to be published to this website, including how to install OS X on an Athlon box, and how to install and configure Drupal. Enjoy!
